George Germanos

A 41-year-old man of Greek descent, Germanos, from Oakleigh was shot dead in a small suburban park in Armadale at about 11pm on March 22, 2001.

A visitor in the area found the man's body about 15 minutes later in the park at corner of Inverness Avenue and The Terrace.

Police identified the man as George Germanos. He was dressed in an open-necked white shirt, dark jacket and pants with black boots.

Police said he had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

"It’s certainly gruesome. It appears to be quite a ghastly scene. It appears he’s been shot a number of times," said Detective Inspector Andrew Allen.

Detective Inspector Allen said the shots were fired from a handgun and that police had not yet found any significant clues.

"A number of leads from the scene were being followed up", he said.

Detective Inspector Allen said Mr Germanos had "hardly any history at all" with the police.

He could not say if Mr Germanos was shot point black, whether shots had been fired from more than one gun and if there was more than one offender.

He also could not say if it was a random attack and said it was "too speculative" to say if his murder had been execution-style.

Mr Germanos’s car, a bronze early model mid-1960s Valiant was taken by police for forensic examination.

Police believe Mr Germanos drove his car down Inverness Avenue and stopped outside the park for unknown reasons.

Detective Inspector Allen said at this stage it didn’t appear that Mr Germanos was involved with drugs or the fruit and vegetable trade.

He appealed for members of the public who may have heard the shots or seen something to come forward.
